FULLERTON — Five Cal State Bakersfield wrestlers put themselves in contention to claim individual Pac-10 Championship titles Sunday after each winning a pair of matches during the first two sessions of the 2009 championship tournament, hosted by Cal State Fullerton.
Brandon Zoetewey, Elijah Nacita, Riley Orozco, Brandon Halsey and Mitch Monteiro all went 2-0 Sunday, advancing to their respective weight bracket’s championship matches tonight.
The Roadrunners (109 points) are in second place behind Boise State (138).
At 125, No. 3 seeded Zoetewey earned pinned No. 6 Matt Sencenbaugh of Stanford in his opening match, then earned a 6-1 decision over No. 2 Marcos Orozco of UC Davis to set up a showdown with No. 1 Anthony Robles of Arizona State in the championship bout.
Nacita, seeded second at 141, majored Stanford’s Cameron Teitleman 10-0 then won 5-1 over No. 3 Cory Fish of Boise State to reach the championship bout. Nacita will face No. 1 Chris Druin of Arizona State for the Pac-10 title.
Orozco (No. 2, 184) opened with a 13-3 major decision over Cal Poly’s Ryan Smith. He later earned a 3-1 decision over No. 3 Jon Clark from UC Davis. Orozco will face No. 1 seed Kirk Smith of Boise State in the title match.
At 197, No. 2 Halsey earned a 10-2 major decision over Arizona State’s Jake Cranford and pinned No. 3 Abraham Otrambo of UC Davis in 1:47. Halsey, who won the 197 lb. Pac-10 title in 2007, will take on No. 1 Brent Chriswell of Boise State for the 2009 title.
In the heavyweight division, No.1 seeded Monteiro took care of business with a 10-0 win over Arizona State’s Imanibon Etukeren and a 3-0 win over UC Davis’ Ricky Alcala, an Arvin High product. Monteiro, the heavyweight runner-up in 2008, faces No. 2 Clayton Jack of Oregon State in the championship match.
