ERIE, Pa. – Gannonâ€™s Kevin McElhaney (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area) has been named to the ESPN The Magazine All-District II At-Large second team released Thursday afternoon.
McElhaney finished 18-11 overall and 5-2 in dual matches during the 2008-09 wrestling season. The mechanical engineering major owns a 3.86 cumulative grade-point average. He is a three-time Coaches Association National Academic selection, being named to the first team as a junior and second team as a sophomore.
On the mat, McElhaney won the 149-pound individual title at the 2009 NCAA Division II East Regional and earned All-America honors with a sixth-place finish at the 2009 NCAA Division II National Championships. He concluded the 2008-09 season with a 57-37 career record. His 23 career pins rank seventh all-time at Gannon.
The 2009 Academic All-District II at-large teams were selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The at-large teams consist of all sports except football, soccer, volleyball, basketball, baseball, softball, track and field, or cross country. The 11 first-team members will now move to the national ballot for Academic All-America consideration. The All-America teams are scheduled to be released Tuesday, June 9.
The District II College Division consist of all NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III, and NAIA colleges and universities in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and West Virginia. To be nominated for the Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.3 cumulative grade-point average and a starter or significant reserve on his team.
