Throughout the off-season, we’re going to be getting to know returning NCAA Division I wrestlers from around the country. We sent questionnaires to every program in the country and will be sharing the results throughout the long trek to next fall. You can find them all whenever you like under the Getting to Know tag.
Name: Kyle Shoop
School: Lock Haven University
Class (for 2017-18): Redshirt Sophomore
In his first season in the line-up, Shoop went 38-17 to tie Zahid Valencia (Arizona State) for the most wins in Division I wrestling. He also tied for seventh in Division I for most tech falls, posting 10. The three-time Pennsylvania state placer at Boiling Springs finished third in the EWL tournament but was granted an at-large spot in the national tournament. Shoop and the other three 2017 national qualifiers for Lock Haven all return next season, looking to push the program even higher.
Rate your 2016-17 season on a scale of 1-10?
Results wise I would rate my season a 10. Never in my wildest dreams did I see myself at the NCAA tournament this year. Also, finishing with what I believe was the most wins in the country is pretty special.
What are you working on this off-season?
I plan to work on all of my positions over the summer because you can never be too good.
Do you plan to wrestle freestyle or Greco in the off-season?
I will be wrestling some freestyle.
What was the most interesting class you took this year?
My most interesting class was intro to accounting because it has very practical applications in the real world.
What was your favorite match this season?
When I wrestled All-American Solomon Chishko from Virginia Tech. I lost 8-3, but the score was not a reflection of the match.
If you could change one rule in college wrestling what would it be?
You should be allowed to leave your feet on a mat return. It would help my tilt game.
When the season ended, what is the one food you had to eat?
I really wasn’t cutting much weight so I was eating what I wanted.
What is your major and what would you like to do with it when you graduate?
Business Management. I plan to get a job and coach high school in my hometown.
