Juniors Jamie Franco and Luke Vaith and sophomore Zeal McGrew recorded the Pride’s only victories on the mat as Hofstra dropped two matches in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA)-Cliff Keen Division I National Duals Regional at Cornell University’s Newman Arena Sunday afternoon.

The Pride dropped a 42-0 decision to 10th-ranked Cornell in the regional semifinal before falling to 11th-ranked Virginia, on a second half rally in the third-place match, 21-15. Hofstra falls to 6-15 as the Pride concluded their regular season dual match schedule and now prepare for the Colonial Athletic Association Championships on March 9 at Boston University.

In the first match, Hofstra was facing the 10th-ranked Big Red of Cornell for the second time in 15 days after a 30-15 Big Red win in Hempstead on February 2. In that contest at Hofstra, the Pride jumped out to a 15-3 lead after the first five matches before the Big Red rallied in the second half of the contest for a 30-15 victory.

There was no doubt in Sunday’s match as Cornell won the first five matches by decisions and then won four of the last five by fall to post the 42-0 victory. Hofstra junior Jamie Franco and sophomore Jermaine John dropped one-point decisions at 133 and 174, respectively. Franco dropped 4-3 decision to Bricker Dixon while John dropped a 3-2 decision to Marshall Peppelman.

In the regional third-place match, Hofstra went up against 11th-ranked Virginia, which dropped a 28-8 decision to 13th-ranked Nebraska in the other regional semifinal match. The Pride won two of the first three matches and led 12-6 at the midway point of the contest after a Pride senior Tyler Banks won by forfeit at 157. Franco defeated Virginia’s George DiCamillo, 6-2 at 133 and junior Luke Vaith posted a 5-2 win over Jimmy Nehls at 141 to give the Pride a 6-3 advantage. After 20th-ranked Derek Valenti tied the match with a win over Cody Ruggirello at 149, Banks’ forfeit win gave the Pride the halftime lead.

Virginia won the first two matches of the second half to knot the contest at 12-all after 16th-ranked Jon Fausey edged Jermaine John, 3-2 at 174. Stephen Doty followed with a pin of Pride freshman David Heitman at the end of the first period of their 184-pound match and Zach Nye topped Tim Murphy at 197 to build a 21-12 advantage. Hofstra sophomore Zeal McGrew closed out the contest with a 3-1 decision victory over Patrick Gillen at 285 pounds.
