On Sunday, Jason Renteria announced over social media that he would be transferring to Iowa from Nebraska. Renteria is the second notable transfer for the Hawkeyes this offseason. The first was former Drexel round-of-12 finisher Austin DeSanto, who like Renteria, wrestled at 133 lbs in 2017-18. Jason was 8-4 wrestling for the Cornhuskers and qualified for the NCAA Championships last year while wrestling as a true freshman. Renteria did not make weight at nationals; therefore he did not compete. In his limited action as a freshman, Jason did defeat eventual NCAA sixth-place finisher Scott Delvecchio three times. This decision comes full-circle for Renteria, an Illinois native, who initially committed to Iowa as a sophomore in high school, reopened his recruiting as a senior and then signed with Nebraska. Jason has been given a full release so he could compete immediately for the Hawkeyes if needed. Both DeSanto and Renteria have redshirt years available so, at this point, it is uncertain who will be competing at 133 lbs in 2018-19.
