Lehigh upends No. 17 Maryland in Pat Santoro’s debut as wrestling coach

Seth Ciasulli, left, of Lehigh and Alex Krom of Maryland wrestle at 141 lbs. Krom won the battle between the former Easton wrestlers 4-1.

Lehigh won six of ten bouts, including four of the final five, to defeat No. 17 Maryland in the debut of wrestling coach Pat Santoro in front of nearly 2,000 fans at Leeman-Turner Arena.

Trailing in the team score 6-3, the Mountain Hawks’ Trevor Chinn got the rally started when he edged Eric Medina 8-6 at 149 pounds. Medina entered the day ranked No. 14 and Chinn No. 15 in the weight class.

“We knew the first four bouts would be key,” said Santoro. “Maryland has some talented guys in the lower weights and we figured we had to steal a couple of bouts to be successful.”

Other winners for Lehigh included John McDonald (9-8 at 125), Mike Galante (8-4 at 165), Alex Caruso (5-3 at 174), David Craig (fall at 184) and freshman Zach Rey (5-3 at 285).
