National Duals: Hawkeyes, Cyclones both advance to semifinals

Cedar Falls, Ia. — Iowa and Iowa State, the top two seeds in the NCAA DivisionI National Duals wrestling tournament, remain on course to meet in Sunday’s championship match at the UNI-Dome.

They are two of six teams from the state in contention for a national title. The others are Coe and defending champion Wartburg in Division III; and defending champion Iowa Central and North Iowa Area Community College in the junior college tournament.

In Sunday’s semifinals at 11 a.m., top-seeded Iowa meets No. 4 seed Nebraska — the team it beat to win the National Duals last season — while No. 2 seed Iowa State faces No. 3 Cornell University.

Those winners meet in the finals at 3 p.m. at the UNI-Dome.

Northern Iowa lost to Ohio State and Michigan today and was eliminated from the tournament. The Panthers have lost five consecutive National Duals matches.
Iowa got bonus points in nine of its 17 individual wins in beating Wyoming 38-3 and Minnesota 27-7.

No. 2 Iowa State handed Indiana its first shutout loss in nearly four years with a 35-0 win. The Cyclones later got a go-ahead pin from Jake Varner at 197 and a decision by heavyweight Dave Zabriskie to beat Boise State 19-15 in the quarterfinals.

Iowa State’s day started with sophomore Tyler Clark scoring a takedown with 1 second left in regulation for a 3-1 upset of defending NCAA 125-pound champion Angel Escobedo of Indiana.

“My game plan was to keep my hands down, stay heavy on his head and tie him up because he’s a real quick wrestler,” Clark said. “I had to keep my hands heavy and keep going forward. (The takedown) was finally there and I took it. ”

The Hawkeyes came out on top in 17 of 20 matches. Squad members showed signs of buying into the constant-attack, point-scoring offensive style coach Tom Brands favors.

“That’s the progress we’ve been looking for for as long as coach Brands has been here,” said top-ranked 149-pounder Brent Metcalf, who had a pin and a 4-point match termination. “You can win a match by 3 points, 4 points and you know you won, but to really feel good about a match is when you’re putting a guy away and separating yourself from him.”

An example was 184-pounder Phil Keddy’s match against Minnesota’s Sonny Yohn. Keddy had a comfortable lead, but he got a late takedown and with riding time scored an 11-3 major decision.

“The way you break somebody is you score points,” Keddy said. “That’s what my problem has been in the past. A lot of times I wrestle hard but I’m not putting enough points on the board. (This way), you put points on the board like that and the guy’s going to crumble.”

Iowa State didn’t crumble in a back-and-forth scrap with Boise State, which is coached by Greg Randall, a four-time state champion at Mount Vernon and an all-America wrestler at Iowa.

The lead changed hands four times and there were two ties before Varner turned Brent Chriswell and pinned him with 10 seconds left in the first period to give the Cyclones a 16-15 lead.

The exciting finish was a good cap for the Cyclones’ day that started with Clark’s big win.

“We’ve got a tough team, we’re here to win,” Varner said.

Wartburg is bracing for a showdown Sunday as the Knights put a 124-meet winning streak against Iowa Conference opponents on the line against No. 4 seed Coe, which is ranked No. 2 in the Division III team poll.

The Knights won 19 of 20 matches today.

“I thought we stayed focused, didn’t look ahead,” Wartburg coach Jim Miller said.
