Old Dominion University redshirt freshman Rob Deutsch has asked for and received a release to transfer. Deutsch, who went 28-11 last year and was second at the CAA championships at 125 pounds and qualified for the NCAA championships. Deutsch transfer back to his native New Jersey and plans to enroll at Rider University, Deutsch’s father Bob confirmed via e-mail on Saturday.

Deutsch took over the starting role late in the season, replacing previous NCAA qualifier Jerome Robinson. Deutsch was ranked by AWN at season’s end and defeated six NCAA qualifiers during the season. He is expected to compete for the starting spot at 125 pounds, a spot Rider had issues with last year due to injuries.

Deutsch will not lose a year of eligibility because he was granted the one-time transfer exception and since Rider and Old Dominion are no longer in the same conference.
