Nebraska-Kearney added to 2014 Virginia Duals

By Nebraska-Kearney Sports Information

Kearney, Neb. – The 3rd-ranked Nebraska-Kearney wrestling team will get several cracks at its Division I brethren this January as the Lopers are now in the 2014 Virginia Duals.

The 34th edition of this tournament will again be held in Hampton, Va., in the Hampton Coliseum January 10-11. The schedule of opponents will be announced sometime in December.

The Virginia Duals is the grandfather of the dual meet advancement concept and the tournament features a unique blend of high school and college wrestling teams competing across 10 mats for two days of competition.

The Virginia Duals Wrestling Club, operated by the Peninsula Wrestling Association, has hosted the event as an annual fundraiser and as a means of putting local high school wrestlers in front of college wrestling programs to gain more exposure and opportunities to compete at the next level and beyond.

UNK is the only non-Division I team in the “National College Division.” Some of the other schools in this year’s field include Arizona State, No. 13 Virginia, No. 15 Edinboro (Pa.), No. 22 Rider (N.J.) and No. 24 Bloomsburg (Pa.).

Since Marc Bauer took over the Loper program in 2000, UNK is 4-10 in duals vs. Division I schools. The wins were against Northwestern, Portland State and Wyoming (twice).

There also is an “American College Division” in the tournament. That features a mix of NCAA Division II and III schools as well as club teams.
