MOUNT PLEASANT – Central Michigan closed its home schedule in grand fashion Friday night as a part of the second ever Royal Rumble and Tumble by defeating in-state foe Eastern Michigan, 31-6.

Each of the Chippewas’ five seniors – Christian Cullinan, Scotti Sentes, Donnie Corby, Ben Bennett and Jarod Trice – defeated their opponent in their final match in McGuirk Arena to help secure an outright Mid-American Conference title.

The Chippewas (13-3, 5-0 MAC) claimed nine of the 10 matches on the night, including the first eight to jump out to a 28-0 lead over the Eagles (7-12, 1-4 MAC), with bonus points from junior Scott Mattingly and Bennett.

Mattingly went up 2-0 over Seth Schaner with a first-period takedown and after starting on the bottom in the second period, reversed Schaner and put him to his back to earn a pin at the 3:47 mark. Bennett was able to earn bonus points at 184 pounds by recording four takedowns and a reversal of Khodar Hoballah to earn a 13-3 major decision.

Cullinan and Sentes opened the dual with a pair of decisions and Corby followed Mattingly’s pin with a 7-2 decision of his own. Redshirt freshman Lucas Smith defeated Chris Rau, 7-2, thanks to a third-period escape and takedown and sophomore Mike Ottinger handled Jacob Davis with four takedowns for a 9-3 decision.

Sophomore Anthony Bill filled in nicely for junior Craig Kelliher at 174 pounds by shutting out Jake Dorulla for a 4-0 decision and No. 5 Jarod Trice earned a takedown with just under 30 seconds left in the match to secure a 3-1 decision over Anthony Abro.

The Chippewas weren’t the only team in the Maroon and Gold to claim a victory inside McGuirk Arena Friday night as the No. 21 gymnastics program also earned a MAC win over Northern Illinois, 194.800-194.025.
