No. 22 Bloomsburg escapes with 19-16 win over rival Lock Haven

LOCK HAVEN—Justin Grant (Easton/Easton)’s win at 285 pounds lifted the 22nd-ranked Bloomsburg University wrestling team to a come-from-behind 19-16 win over Lock Haven in the Huskies EWL (Eastern Wrestling League) opener Thursday night.

The Huskies were without two of their top nationally ranked performers as both Bryce Busler (Mechanicsburg/Cumberland Valley) (149) and Josh Veltre (Rochester, NY/Greece Olympia) (165) missed the match due to injury.

Bloomsburg trailed several times in the match, the last being 16-12 after 184 pounds.

“Our guys wrestled well tonight overcoming some adversity,” said Mester. “Being down in the dual our guys responded well.”

Bloomsburg goes to 3-2, 1-0 in the EWL, while Lock Haven goes 2-4, 0-2 in the EWL.

At 125 pounds the Huskies jumped out to a 3-0 lead after a win by Sean Boylan (Seaville, NJ/St. Marks). The senior got a second period escape, then, rode out the third period to win 2-0. Bloomsburg extended its lead to 6-0 after Nick Wilcox (Greene, NY/Greene Central) scored a win. Wilcox led 2-0 after one period; then led 6-2 after two periods before posting a 7-4 win.

Lock Haven got on the board with a win at 141 pounds. Bloomsburg’s Matt Rappo (Holland/Council Rock South) and Dan Neff from Lock Haven were 0-0 after one period. Rappo escaped in the second period to go up1-0 before Neff scored a takedown with just 20 seconds left to win 5-4 and make it a 6-3 match.

At 149 pounds the Huskies lost by fall when Mac Maldarelli got a second period pin in 4:55 to put the Bald Eagles up 9-6. The Huskies tied the score at 9-9 when Kevin Hartnett (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell) got three first period takedowns and went on to an 8-2 win.

Lock Haven regained the lead at 13-9 when Jake Kemerer won by major decision 17-6 over Mark Granahan (Scranton/Scranton). At 174 pounds Mike Dessino (Middlesex, NJ/Middlesex) won 3-0 over Dylan Caprio. The pair were scoreless after two periods before Dessino got an escape and a takedown to get the win and close the gap to 13-12.

At 184 the Huskies Sam Shirey (Beaver Springs/Midd-West) faced off with #15 Fred Garcia with Garcia pulling out a 4-3 win. Garcia led 4-2 after two periods and Shirey could not get the takedown for the win. The win extended Lock Haven’s lead to 16-12.

The Huskies Richard Perry (Meriden, CT/Middletown), ranked 8th, faced off with Phil Sprenkle at 197 pounds. Perry led 2-0 after one period, then, extended it to 5-0 with an escape and a takedown. In the third period Perry got two takedowns and got a point for riding time to win by major decision 12-2 and tie the score at 16-all.

The match then came down to a battle between the Huskies 19th-ranked Justin Grant (Easton/Easton) against Cody Mason. Grant led 2-1 after one period aftergetting a takedown. In the second period Grant started down and escaped to lead 3-1 after two. Mason started down in the third and escaped with 30 seconds left, but Grant got the bonus point for riding time and won 4-2.

Bloomsburg is idle till December 29 when it wrestles at the Lock Haven Invitational.
