LAWRENCEVILLE—Sophomore 149 Curt Delia (Mullica Hill/Delsea) of the Rider University wrestling team was named the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) wrestler of the week for all competition January 6-12.
This past weekend, Rider (9-5) competed at the 34th annual Virginia Duals in Hampton, Virginia with the Broncs placing sixth of 14 teams, winning three of five matches.
Delia went undefeated (5-0) during the two-day event, defeating a 2013 NCAA All-American and a 2013 NCAA qualifier along the way.
“Curt wrestled well at the Virginia Duals,” said associate head coach John Hangey. “Defeating a returning All-American is a big step forward for his confidence. It is important that he continues to move forward from this point in preparation for the EWLs and NCAAs.”
On January 10, Delia opened with a pin against George Mason University in 3:51, giving the Broncs a 14-6 lead in the eventual 25-16 dual meet win.
Against Virginia Tech., Friday afternoon, Delia won a hard-fought 5-4 decision over 2013 NCAA All-American Zach Neibert that tied the dual 6-6 against the Hokies before the Broncs lost 25-9.
On January 11, Rider posted a 28-15 win over The Citadel with Delia scoring a 7-5 decision over another 2013 NCAA qualifier Matt Frisch with his win giving Rider a 16-0 dual lead.
Rider then advanced to face Arizona State out of the Pac 12 conference and Rider was victorious 25-11, behind a major win (12-4) from Delia that gave the Broncs a 10-4 lead over the Sun Devils.
In the battle for fifth place against UT-Chattanooga, the Broncs fell 26-15 with Delia scoring an injury default win at the 50 second mark of the bout that got Rider to within 9-8.
During his five match run, Delia scored 22 out of a possible 30 team points for Rider.
Delia has won six matches in a row and is now 13-9 on the season, 9-5 in dual bouts. His three wins by fall are tied for the most on the Rider squad this season.
Delia is the second Rider wrestler honored by the EWL this season with sophomore 125 Robert Deutsch (Cherry Hill/Eastern Regional) recognized for the week of December 16-22.
Rider hosts Bloomsburg Friday, January 17 at 7 p.m., in Alumni Gymnasium on the Lawrenceville, New Jersey campus.
