LAWRENCEVILLE-Rider University’s Ryan Wolfe has been named the Colonial Athletic Association Rookie Wrestler of the Week for all competition January 22-28.
A freshman from New Castle, DE (Caravel Academy), Wolfe won both of his matches last week to improve to 19-9 overall, 3-1 in the CAA.
“Ryan is a talented young man,” said Rider head coach Gary Taylor, “who needs to continue to grow. He is clearly heading in the right direction. He has a lot of talent but can get so much better. His upside is very high in the future.”
Currently the top ranked 184 in the CAA, he defeated the fourth ranked 184 in the conference from Old Dominion with an 11-1 major decision last week. He previously defeated the former top ranked 184 in the CAA from Binghamton.
“He beat the top seed in the CAA last week so yes, I’d say he’s doing pretty well,” Taylor said of his star rookie. “He beat another good wrestler against Army. It’s nice to have someone step in like that. He’s very talented.”
Wolfe was wrestling unattached at tournaments, planning on red-shirting this season, until the starting184, sophomore Clint Morrison (Mechanicsburg, Pa./Cedar Cliff), was lost for the season.
Wolfe was the 2012 Delaware State Champion and was a two-time State Finalist at Caravel Academy, where he was the Beast of the East Champion and ranked 12th in the nation last year. The Delaware Wrestler of the Year last year, Wolfe compiled 173 wins, the second most all-time in Delaware Scholastic wrestling.
Rider hosts Sacred Heat February 9 and CAA-foe Drexel February 10.
