Rutgers Wrestling Goes 1-1 at Second Annual “Grapple at the Garden”

Anthony Hernandez, Athletic Communications Assistant – Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Dec. 1, 2013) – The Rutgers wrestling team suffered a heartbreaking, 19-18 loss to future Big Ten opponent Maryland in its second match at the Second Annual “Grapple at the Garden” Sunday afternoon. RU topped George Mason, 29-10, in its first dual of the day to split the competition for the second consecutive year.

In a winner-take-all scenario at 285 pounds and the Scarlet Knights leading, 18-16, against Maryland, the Terrapins’ No. 6/11/7 Spencer Myers narrowly outlasted No. 16/18/17 Billy Smith (Wantage, N.J.) in the second round of tiebreakers to hand RU a difficult,19-18 loss.

The one-point defeat was the first for the Scarlet Knights since Nov. 26, 2011, when the squad fell, 16-15, to Central Michigan at the 2011 Northeast Duals.

Redshirt senior 133-pounder Vinnie Dellefave (Toms River, N.J.), sophomore Ken Theobold (Toms River, N.J.), redshirt junior 165-pounder Nick Visicaro (Long Branch, N.J.) and redshirt freshman 174-pounder Phil Bakuckas (Hammonton, N.J.) all posted 2-0 marks Sunday.

Rutgers (5-2, 2-0) began its match with Maryland by winning at 125 and 133 pounds to take a 6-0 lead. Freshman Scott DelVecchio (South Plainfield, N.J.) took a 2-0 decision over Billy Rappo, before No. 18/18/NR Dellefave earned his second win of the day, 9-3, over Tyler Goodwin. No. 16 (AWN) Shyhiem Browm responded at 141 pounds for the Terrapins, narrowly edging freshman Tyson Dippery (Harrisburg, Pa.), 5-2, in a hard-fought bout. The loss snapped a nine-bout winning streak for Dippery, who drops to 4-1 in dual action after winning the first four dual starts of his career.

A pin by Theobold, his second of the afternoon, was one of three RU victories in the next four bouts, as the Scarlet Knights held onto an 18-6 lead with three bouts left.

Maryland’s ranked grapplers rose to the occasion in the final three bouts, as No. 2/3/3 Jimmy Sheptock, No. 13/11/13 Christian Boley and Myers recorded a tech fall, fall and tiebreaker decision, respectively, to earn the 19-18 win.

The Terrapins now trail the all-time series against RU, 6-5-1, with both programs moving into the Big Ten next season.

The Scarlet Knights posted a convincing, 29-10 victory in their first match of the day, winning the first eight bouts against George Mason for their fifth victory of the season. It was the squad’s second-highest scoring output of the season after the team scored a 30-12 win against Clarion on Nov. 22.

RU began the match with a 9-0 major decision from freshman Sean McCabe (Connetquot, N.Y.) at 125 pounds, where he earned his first dual win of the season.

From there, Dellefave returned to the win column after dropping a pair of bouts at the Asics/Journeymen Northeast duals, earning a 9-3 decision over Rich Carroll-Lavorato.

Dippery maintained his torrid start to his Scarlet Knights’ career, winning his team-high ninth consecutive bout and fourth-straight dual matchup to begin his career. The bout was tied, 7-7, after the first sudden victory, setting Dippery up to win, 9-7, in the second sudden victory period with a late takedown.

The Scarlet Knights then went on to win the next six bouts, which included a pin (1:41) by Theobold at 149 pounds and a 12-3 major decision by Visicaro 165 pounds.

It was the most consecutive bouts won in a dual match since RU won the first seven bouts – 125 pounds to 174 pounds – last season in a 31-12 victory at Brown (Jan. 20, 2013). RU now leads the all-time series against the Patriots, 8-3-1.

RU will be back in action from Dec. 6-7 in Las Vegas, Nev., at the 32nd Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate Wrestling Invitational.
