Seton Hill announces incoming class of 2014-15

The Griffin Wrestling squad, lead by head coach Brian Tucker, has announced the incoming recruiting class for the 2014-2015 season. The team added 12 recruits to their roster and looks to capitalize on the success seen by returning Griffin Zach Voytek.

“This recruiting class comes in with some pretty impressive wrestling credentials. Each of these recruits has the potential to make an impact to the team immediately. It is great to see the Seton Hill Wrestling name become a desired location for such high talented high school wrestlers,” said Coach Tucker.

Jacob Temple – Avella Area High School/ West Middleton, PA – Projected weight: 197
Jake comes to Griffins after capturing the 2014 PIAA AA State Title at 220 pounds and completing his senior season with a 43 – 0 record. Jake finished with an overall high school record of 146 – 17, was a three time PIAA State qualifier, with a fourth place finish as a junior and a champion as a senior. Jake was also a three time Freestyle and Greco – Roman State Champion and posted a 3.1 high school GPA.

“Jake’s ability to excel at a smaller school displays his overall desire to succeed,” said Tucker. “Jake will definitely make a positive impact right away.”

Mike Soria – University of Buffalo/ Kings Park, NY – Projected weight: 125/ 133
Mike joins the Griffins after spending four seasons at the University of Buffalo. This past season Mike’s biggest win came over NCAA Qualifier Nathanial Kraisser of North Carolina. During Mike’s four seasons he has multiple place finishes at Division 1 opens. In high school Mike was ranked top 10 in the country for his weight class and finished 4th at NHSCA Senior Nationals.

Coach Tucker commented, “It is great to have Mike become a Griffin. Bringing the experience of years at a Division I program into our room is only going to propel this program.”

Pat Owens – University of North Carolina/ Philadelphia, PA – Projected weight: 141/ 149
Pat was a member of the UNC wrestling program and posted a career record of 28-28 over three seasons. This included a 5th and 4th place finishes at the Virginia Tech Open. In high school Pat was a three time PA State Prep Champion and was a National Prep Champion as a senior. He was a two time finalist at Beast of the East and a three time place winner at the Ironman Tournament

“Pat has a really inspiring story. He was in a terrible car accident in high school and was even in a coma for four days,” Coach Tucker stated solemnly, “What he has accomplished since then is amazing and I still believe he hasn’t hit his full potential as a wrestler.”

Levi Stoyer – Reynolds High School/ Greenville, PA – Projected weight: 149/ 157
This past season Levi was a captain on the Reynolds High School Wrestling team which finished second in the PIAA AA State Team Championships. Levi is a two time PIAA AA State Qualifier and finished 7th as a junior. He was a two time Northwest Regional Champion and finished with a career record of 82-26.

Coach Tucker on Levi. “Having fallen short of his goals in high school, Levi comes in feeling he has something to prove. He comes from a great high school program and his work ethic will continue to mold him into a great college wrestler.”

Dalton Rosta – Laurel High School/ New Castle, PA – Projected weight: 184
Projecting at 184 pounds Dalton comes in posting a 62 – 13 career record. As a high school freshman Dalton was a state runner up in Arizona. He continued his success in PA as a two time MAC Champion and a Sectional Champion.

“Dalton is still pretty new to the sport. Because of that he wants to be on the mat learning all of the time. We recruit and need guys with a hard work ethic such as Dalton.” – Coach Brian Tucker

Alex Soutiere – University of Albany/ Ravena, NY – Projected weight: 285
Alex was on the football team at University of Albany but decided that pursuing a wrestling career at Seton Hill would be a better fit. In high school Alex was a two time New York State place winner finishing 2nd as a junior and 3rd as a senior. He compiled a career record of 145-25.

“Alex is a very good size heavyweight, but demonstrates a good deal of athleticism, ” stated Tucker. “This will fit nicely into the collegiate style.”

Ryan Walters – Waynesburg University/ Latrobe, PA – Projected weight: 174
Ryan most recently was competing at Waynesburg University. Ryan was a regional place winner, and a Waynesburg Tournament finalist. During high school, Ryan had over 100 wins, was a three time county champion, three-time Powerade finalist, three time King of the Mountain finalist, and three time sectional champion for Latrobe.

“Ryan is a local recruit and will be a great asset having had collegiate wrestling experience at an established program such as Waynesburg.” – Coach Tucker

Garrett Schultz – Akron Central High School/ Akron, NY – Projected Weight: 157/ 165
At Akron Central, Garrett was a four-year varsity starter and a team captain. He was a two time team MVP posting a career record of 120 – 40 with 79 of his wins by pin. He was a two time NO League Champion and a Section 6 Class C Champion. He holds seven career school records.

“I am excited to have Garrett join the team. I really think he has the potential to become piece of the puzzle to our teams growing success.” – Coach Tucker

Max Gladstone – Findlay High School / Tiffin, OH – Projected Weight: 285
Max comes to Seton Hill after finishing his enlisted duties with the United States Marine Corps. Max comes in from Findlay High School where he placed 3rd in the state as a senior.

“I am glad Max has decided to come to Seton Hill. He has a huge desire to get back in to wrestling and win at the highest level. He will be a great asset to the team,” said Coach Tucker

These recruits are in addition to the three early signees listed below.

Rodney Sunday – Dallastown Area High School/ York, PA Projected weight: 125/ 133
Rodney was a two time PIAA State AAA 5th Place Finisher out of Dallastown Area High School. He finished with an overall record of 137-26, is a three – time district qualifier, including a 2014 champion and four – time sectional champion. Rodney also excels in the classroom bringing a 4.29 GPA and plans to enroll in the Biology Program at Seton Hill.

Coaches Comment: “Rodney is a great kid and a fun wrestler to watch. He doesn’t stop. He goes from move to move to move. He fits in perfect with our program philosophy.”

Joey Alessandro – Hempfield Area High School/ North Huntingdon, PA Projected weight: 141
Alessandro is a local recruit from Hempfield Area High School. He is projected for the 141-pound weight class. Joey was a 2014 PIAA AAA State Qualifier. Joey is a four – time Westmoreland County place winner and two – time finalist. He is a three – time WPIAL qualifier including 3rd place finish in 2014. Joey brings in a 3.7 GPA and plans to major in Accounting while at SHU.

Coaches Comment: “Joey was a great pick up as we continue to build our local recruiting base. He is on the verge of solidifying himself as one of the best wrestlers in the state. That success will only continue as he becomes a Griffin.”

Collin Dees – Perry High School/ Perry, OH Projected weight: 125/133
Collin comes to the Griffins projecting to compete at the 125 or 133 pound weight class. He is a 2x Ohio State Qualifier including a 4th place finish in 2013. He is also a 2x sectional champion and 3x district qualifier. Besides his success on the mat Collin is an honor roll student holding a current class rank of 6th , with a GPA of 4.33. He also serves as a math tutor and a volunteer in the ER at Lake Health Hospital Systems Madison. Collin plans to enroll in the Physician Assistant program while at Seton Hill.

Coaches Comment: “Collin is an extremely impressive young man. He is a very mature and motivated individual and will be a great asset to the building of the Griffin Wrestling program.”
