The Citadel Moves on from Head Coach Rob Hjerling

The Citadel

Today, news broke from the Post and Courier that The Citadel would not renew the contract of their head wrestling coach, Rob Hjerling. Rob had been at the helm for The Citadel since the 1999-2000 season. Under his direction, the Bulldogs won a pair of SoCon titles and he was named the conference’s Coach of the Year in 2004 and 2014. All four of the school’s All-Americans (Dan Thompson in 2006; Odie Delaney and Ugi Khishignyam in 2013; and Turtogtokh Luvsandorj in 2014) wrestled for Hjerling.

In his final year with the program, The Citadel had a 4-6 dual record and saw Selwyn Porter qualify for the NCAA Championships at 149 lbs. The 2015 tournament was the last time that more than one Bulldog wrestler qualified for nationals.

The Citadel will be the second SoCon school with a new head coach in 2020-21 as Campbell promoted Scotti Sentes after Cary Kolat left for Navy.

The school is said be starting a search for a new head coach immediately.
