TOM’s 2019 Preseason Hodge Trophy Watch List

With less than a month to go until the start of the 2019-20 regular season for college wrestling, it’s time for a look at the preseason contenders for the Dan Hodge Trophy. The Hodge Trophy has been presented by WIN Magazine every year since 1995 and it has gone to a wrestler from the Penn State Nittany Lions in each of the last three seasons. While this is the preseason watch list, it is, by no means, comprehensive or limited to these six competitors. There is certainly the possibility that someone not among this group emerges to pose a threat.

Before we get into the contenders, remember the seven criteria used to determine the winner: 1) Record 2) Number of pins 3) Dominance 4) Past Credentials 5) Quality of Competition 6) Sportsmanship/Citizenship 7) Heart. Of course, numbers six and seven are difficult to quantify and it seems like every one of the wrestlers mentioned would qualify for both of those factors. Our breakdown of the candidates will primarily focus on the other five points of criteria.

6) Vincenzo Joseph (Penn State)
