This week’s college wrestler of the week earns the honor after knocking off the number one wrestler in the 174 lb weight class. In one of the most anticipated matches of the season, to date, Mark Hall was able to shut down Zahid Valencia (Arizona State) 4-0 which aided top-ranked Penn State in their 41-3 victory over 12th-ranked Arizona State. After a second period escape, Hall was able to stop a Valencia attack and turned it into a takedown of his own, to take a commanding 3-0 lead after two periods. In the third, Hall rode out the Sun Devil for the entire period to earn a riding time point, as well. The loss was only the second in the career for Valencia (both are to Hall) and broke his 43-match winning streak. Before the match, Hall seemed to be an underdog, as he fell 8-2 in the 2018 NCAA Finals to Valencia, which was the most recent meeting between the two. When the new set of rankings come out tomorrow, Hall will be back in the number one position and is in the driver’s seat for earning the number one seed at the 2019 NCAA Championships.
