This weeks College Wrestler of the Week, Gable Steveson earns the honor after picking up his first collegiate dual meet victory. The highly anticipated debut of Steveson, the top recruit in the Class of 2018, took place Sunday evening during Minnesota’s dual with Oklahoma State. Over the past few months, there was speculation on both ends of the spectrum, as to whether Steveson would redshirt the 2018-19 season or compete right away. Friday evening reports came out of the Minnesota camp that Gable would be starting at heavyweight for the Gophers in Sunday’s dual. Gable did not need any tune ups, he jumped right into the fire against the fourth-ranked 285 lber in the nation Derek White (Oklahoma State). Less than a minute into the match Gable was able to get to a leg attack after a big snap-down and finished the shot all the way to White’s back for six points. That sequence would be the deciding factor in the bout, as Gable would go on to win 8-2. In the match, Steveson demonstrated why he was such as highly sought-after recruit, winning the hand-fighting battles, using his athleticism to prevent any attacks by White, and being able to gain a riding-time point from the mat. As expected, this win will vault Gable up the 285 lb rankings, and he should be one of the top title contenders in Pittsburgh this March.
