Fresh off my first defeat of the season, I am back and ready for more. Wins hopefully, I am still trying to shake off the ill effects of not predicting the Tiffin upset of McKendree. That is why we wrestle the duals though because “experts” like me do not know anything. This week Kutztown University is playing host to some outstanding DII wrestling teams as they come together to do battle. I have chosen the matchup between 10th ranked UNC-Pembroke and #16 Kutztown as the DII Dual of the Week.

If you go simply by the team rankings, this should be an easy win for UNC-Pembroke. Unfortunately, the team rankings are missing a few things. They have Rodney Sheppard (UNC) ranked second at 165, but he will not get the call on this trip. They also do not have TC Warner (Kutz) ranked at 174, the returning All-American is back and will get the nod Friday night. That is a very large point swing and puts incredible pressure on the rest of Pembroke head coach Othello Johnson’s lineup. The Braves lineup still boasts two wrestlers ranked in the top six, but will have very little margin for error. Robert Fisher has been steady at the helm for Kutztown over the last 18 years and they will look to defend their home mat against the rising UNC-Pembroke team. Fresh off his 200th dual victory at last weeks Virginia Duals, he is looking to get his team rolling in the second half as they add firepower to their lineup. Coach Johnson has been the catalyst behind the growth of North Carolina DII wrestling as teams like  UNC, NCST, Duke, and Campbell have their own success at the DI level. The south shall rise again and UNC-Pembroke is part of that revival. Recent history is on the side of Kutztown in this dual though, they have won the last three meetings dating back to the 2009-2010 season. They won last seasons meeting 22-14 and we shall see how it goes in 2018-19.

As always with our Dual of the Week, we’ll break down each matchup, what each team needs to do to win, make our predictions, and have the WrestleStat take on the dual as well.
