Rejoice, college wrestling is back! What better way to celebrate the start of the season than to feature a battle between the #10 Missouri Tigers and #16 Virginia Tech Hokies. Those two teams are not in the same conference they have faced off in each of the last three seasons. During that time, Missouri took all three of those matches. Last year's 21-8 victory for the Tigers came right in the middle of a 35-match dual winning streak for Mizzou. This Missouri team may be slightly down, by their lofty standards, with a notable Olympic redshirt and the graduation of two All-Americans. Years of quality recruiting and development should prevent head coach Brian Smith’s Missouri team from falling too far.
The same can be said for Tony Robie’s Virginia Tech squad that is without their NCAA champion and four seniors from the 2019 season. While the Hokies are relatively young, they do have plenty of talent that could be on the verge of breaking out. Virginia Tech finished the 2018-19 season with a 9-5 dual record and was second in the ACC to NC State. At the NCAA Championships, Robie helped guide Mekhi Lewis to the program’s first national championship, with helped contribute to the team’s 11th place finish.
Here’s a breakdown of the probable matchups and TOM’s predictions, along with projections from WrestleStat.
