In a week that is light on the dual schedule, we are lucky to have such a juicy matchup as is the case when 12th ranked Arizona State travels to State College, Pennsylvania to meet the top team in the country, the three-time defending NCAA Champions, Penn State. This is the first meeting between the schools in a dual since 2001. That meeting, like six of the previous seven matches between the two, occurred at the National Duals, though it took place on the PSU campus.
Penn State comes into this matchup with a 3-0 record. They have only lost two matches total in those three duals. Nine of the ten Nittany Lion starters are ranked, and seven of them are in the top five of their respective weight class. Four Penn State wrestlers (Jason Nolf, Vincenzo Joseph, Mark Hall, Bo Nickal) already have NCAA titles to their credit. As a team, the Nittany Lions are on a 48-match dual winning streak which dates back to the 2014-15 season.
The Arizona State Sun Devils are led by 2018 NCAA Champion Zahid Valencia, who had won the first title by an ASU wrestler since 2011. Three All-Americans can be found in the 2018-19 lineup for the Sun Devils. ASU is in the midst of a very ambitious non-conference dual meet schedule. They have already dropped matches to Ohio State and North Carolina, while dates with ranked opponents Michigan, Lock Haven, Lehigh, and Missouri are on the horizon
This match will air live on ESPN2 Friday at 6pm eastern.
