Normally we don’t get to see high-profile dual meets on a weeknight, but this week we are in for a treat as 17th ranked Northern Iowa travels to take on number six Missouri. It will be a good ole MAC rivalry, just like the old days. And by good ole days, I mean 2013-17 when these two schools competed in the MAC. Northern Iowa went to qualify through the Big 12 last season, leaving Missouri atop the conference without much competition. The host Tigers enter this meet with an 11-0 record for the year and boast a 31 match dual winning streak, which extends back to the 2016-17 season. Missouri boasts a dangerous lineup, especially in dual competition, featuring eight of ten starters that are currently ranked. Head coach Brian Smith’s Mizzou squad is led by a pair of multiple-time All-Americans Jaydin Eierman and Daniel Lewis, both ranked in the top four of their respective weight classes.
Looking to stop the streaking Tigers will be Doug Schwab’s Northern Iowa Panthers. UNI features a lineup that has five wrestlers that are ranked in the top ten and two former All-Americans. Northern Iowa comes into this match with a 2-3 record after losing to Pittsburgh, Cornell, and Nebraska. Although these schools are no longer conference rivals, they have still continued to wrestle each other with Missouri winning their 2017-18 meeting 23-9.
Here’s a breakdown of the probable matchups and TOM’s predictions, along with projections from WrestleStat.
125 - Jay Schwarm (Northern Iowa) vs. Dack Punke (Missouri)
