TOM’s NCAA Wrestling Dual of the Week: #21 Campbell at #11 Pittsburgh

Don’t you love it! The Dual of the Week for the second week of the college wrestling season is #11 Pittsburgh hosting #21 Campbell. That’s right, Pittsburgh and Campbell. Sometimes went ranked teams meet in dual competition, they just don’t match up well. Ranked wrestlers end up hitting unranked guys and the meet doesn’t look as good in person, as it did on paper. Luckily, this is not one of those instances! Most of the top dogs from both teams will end up clashing, which makes for an entertaining afternoon of action. Four of the ten matches are expected to feature ranked wrestlers meeting head-to-head, with one of them showcasing a pair of top-ten competitors.

Both of these squads could be called “up-and-coming.” Campbell has continued to improve every year under the tutelage of Cary Kolat. The Camels have nine returning national qualifiers on their roster and could feature seven of them in action on Saturday. They will certainly be a “tough out” for anyone on their schedule in the 2019-20 season.

That includes #11 Pittsburgh who is in the third year under head coach Keith Gavin. The Panthers return three wrestlers who made it to the NCAA Round of 12 last season among their five national qualifiers. Three also have earned ACC Championships at some point in their careers.

What happens when Cary Kolat brings a deep Camel team to his old western Pennsylvania stomping grounds? For a breakdown of the probable matchups and TOM’s predictions, along with projections from WrestleStat.
