The last weekend of the regular season is upon us! What a better way to close out the dual meet season than by having two of the best and most historic programs going head-to-head. Both Oklahoma State and Iowa have identical 14-0 records, while the Cowboys sit at number two in the dual meet rankings and the Hawkeyes are just behind in third place. Both teams are expected to send out a lineup that feature nine of ten possible ranked wrestlers. The potential matchups are mouth-watering, as we could see matches between top-ten ranked wrestlers in half of the bouts. Each team boasts two wrestlers currently ranked number two in the nation, in their respective weights classes. Iowa has one wrestler that is still undefeated while Oklahoma State has two.
Out of the four active coaches that have won NCAA team titles, two of them will be in attendance and guiding their alma maters, in Iowa’s Tom Brands and Oklahoma State’s John Smith. Both are Olympic gold medalists and among the most intense competitors our sport has ever seen. Think these two could not be any more even, well their career record against each other sits at 6-6-1, since Brands has been the head coach at Iowa. After Sunday, one of the two will jump back in front and their team will stake their claim to the number two spot in TOM’s dual rankings.
Here's a breakdown of the probable matchups and TOM's predictions, along with projections from WrestleStat.
125 - #2 Spencer Lee (Iowa) vs. #4 Nick Piccininni (Oklahoma State)
