On a weekend filled with huge duals and colossal individual matchups, this one between fourth-ranked Iowa and seventh-ranked Minnesota takes the cake. If they start at 125 lbs, the first five matches of the dual will feature wrestlers currently ranked in the top 20 by TOM. Counting both sides, three wrestlers are currently ranked number two at their respective weight classes slated to compete.
This is the 104th meeting between the two Big Ten rivals. Iowa has won the last four meetings and holds the lead in the all-time series 74-28-1. Iowa comes into Minneapolis 6-0 and 1-0 in the Big Ten. The Hawkeye nearly ruined their perfect dual record on December 1st, with a one-point win while hosting Iowa State. Two Iowa wrestlers emerged as victorious in the most recent outing, at the Midlands Championships in Hoffman Estates, Illinois. Minnesota is currently 8-1 and 1-0 in the Big Ten after dispatching of Rutgers on Sunday. The Gophers only loss came early in the season to Oklahoma State. In late December, while Iowa was at the Midlands, Minnesota went undefeated at the South Beach Duals with wins over Lehigh, North Carolina, and Utah Valley.
Here is a breakdown of the probable matchups and TOM’s predictions, along with projections from WrestleStat.
