Recently, TOM got a chance to speak with Illinois assistant coach Mike Poeta. In our conversation, Mike talks about how the team will acknowledge Travis Piotrowski, who was recently named to the All-American first team by the NWCA, along with reaction from a 10-4 season that has brought hope for the future. The future is bright in Champaign as three freshmen national qualifiers return, along with NCAA alternate who was a true freshman, some tough freshmen that redshirted in 2019-20 and a strong recruiting class. We also address fellow staff member Isaiah Martinez, who has seemingly been left out of the Olympic talk between Jordan Burroughs and Kyle Dake at 74 kg and Mike’s place on the Top 20 Non-NCAA Champions of the Last 20 years. Finally, TOM learns that, in addition to spending more time with his family during the quarantine, Mike has been able to devote some time to hobbies like playing piano and graphic design.
