Unbeaten and top-ranked Iowa defeated the Gophers wrestling team 25-9 in Iowa City on Sunday.
The No. 11 Gophers (14-7, 4-3 Big Ten) got victories from Zach Sanders (125), Tyler Safratowich (157) and heavyweight Ben Berhow.
Sanders’ victory gave the Gophers a 3-0 lead. Safratowich’s victory — the 101st of his Gophers’ career — pulled the Gophers within 12-6, but the Hawkeyes (22-0, 6-0) won the next four matches to take a 25-6 lead.
In the opening match of the meet, seventh-ranked Sanders edged No. 3 Charlie Falck by a 5-4 score. Trailing 4-3 late in the third period, Sanders recorded a takedown with less than 15 seconds left in the match to grab the 5-4 lead and give Minnesota a 3-0 advantage in the dual. Sanders held on in the closing seconds to record his fifth win over a ranked opponent this season and his first over an opponent ranked in the top five nationally.
The Gophers wrestle at No. 3 Iowa State on Friday before closing out the Big Ten regular season at home against No. 20 next Sunday.
