What to Watch This Weekend – October 28th, 2016

Austin O'Connor - North Carolina

This is the calm before the storm as we head into the last weekend before the NCAA wrestling action gets underway. The slate is not completely bare, but it is fair to say there is about to be a lot more to watch!

Agony in Ames

Austin Gomez versus Alex Thomsen, Brody Teske versus Travis Ford-Melton, and Jerod Verkleeren versus Austin O’Connor are just some of the intriguing match-ups on the card set for Saturday night in Ames. You can read our full Agony in Ames preview here.

Rumble at the Rowdy

The legendary John Smith returns to the mat to take on Oklahoma State’s softball coach, Kenny Gajewski, after Gajewski lost a bet to his team that they wouldn’t get hit-by-pitch 50 times this season. The match will take place in Gallagher-Iba Arena as part of homecoming festivities and admission is free.

Wrestle-Offs and Intrasquads

Lehigh, Bucknell, Michigan State, Rider, Chattanooga, and Kent State all had their wrestle-offs or intrasquad duals last night and there are a lot more scheduled for this weekend. Iowa State and Northern Illinois get after it tonight while, on Saturday, Virginia Tech, Edinboro, Arizona State, Utah Valley, Pittsburgh, Boise State, and North Dakota State will take the mat. On Sunday, Michigan, Maryland, Central Michigan, and Purdue will hold their events.  It will be interesting to see which big names fall to teammates.  Already 11th ranked Scottie Boykin of Chattanooga went down, 3-2, to fellow senior Clay Dent who has a career record of 14-20.
