The future continues to look bright for the University of Iowa as today the Hawkeyes received a verbal commitment from one of the top juniors in the nation, Drake Ayala (Fort Dodge, IA). As first reported by IAWrestle.com , Ayala had a long list of potential suitors but decided to state in-state and compete for Tom Brands’ team. Drake is now a two-time Iowa state champion and three-time finalist. In TOM’s most recent ranking of the Class of 2021, Ayala came in a #10 overall and finished the year ranked second in the nation at 120 lbs. Along with Wyatt Henson (Waynesburg, PA), Cam Lucero (Pagosa Springs, CO), and Caleb Rathjen (Ankeny, IA), Ayala will help form an imposing recruiting Class of 2021 for the Hawkeyes.

Drake will join a talented cast of lightweights that will attempt to replace two-time national champion Spencer Lee at the 125 lbs weight class after the 2020-21 season. The Hawkeyes currently have freshman Aaron Cashman in the mix and will add Cullan Schriever and Jesse Ybarra this fall. Some of them may factor in at 133 lbs, as well.

Aside from his high school credentials, Ayala has won Fargo twice, once at the Cadet freestyle level and last summer in Junior freestyle. Before his sophomore season, Drake went east to the Super 32 and was a finalist at 106 lbs.

With his commitment, five of the top ten recruits from the Class of 2021 have given verbals to DI programs.
