A day after Penn State’s recruiting made headlines when Adam Busiello switched his commitment from Penn State to Arizona State, the Nittany Lions received a big verbal from Carter Starocci (Cathedral Prep, PA). The addition of Starocci, ranked 18th in the Class of 2019, will help brace PSU fans for the loss of Busiello. Before Carter’s commitment, Penn State did not have any commitments from seniors in the top 100. At the time of his commitment, Starocci was the highest ranked senior still on the board.
Starocci won his first Pennsylvania state championship in 2017-18 at 160 lbs. He has won Fargo’s Cadet Freestyle championship in 2017 and then placed fourth in Junior Freestyle this summer. In the offseason, Starocci also competed at the UWW Cadet World Team Trials and took third at 80 kg. His only loss was decided by criteria and came at the hands of the eventual world bronze medalist Abe Assad (Glenbard North, IL).
Carter will fit in well for the Nittany Lions at 174 lbs. That is one of the few weights where Cael Sanderson’s staff does not have a blue-chip recruit either on campus, as a freshman, or taking a grayshirt. Current 174 lber Mark Hall is beginning his junior season so he would be able to finish up as a senior while Starocci redshirts.
