Last weekend one of the most storied state tournaments in the nation took place as the CIF conducted the California State Championship. The words “state championship” are singular since there is only one state tournament for the entire state. Over 900 school participant in the state tournament series, culminating in the state championship event in Bakersfield. Since there are so many schools competing for this one state title, the brackets in California are bigger than anywhere else in the country. The boys have brackets of 40, while the girls have 32.
History was made as the “four-time state champ” club got just a little bigger and fans were treated to one of the best team performances in the history of the state. Last year, California changed things up and held the girls finals at the same time as the boys. That was met with mixed reviews, as some have enjoyed the added exposure for the girl’s finals, while others have thought that both are special by themselves. Either way, the California girls tournament is still the gold standard nationwide.
We’ve combed through the 28 brackets from the boys and girls tournament to bring you some of the interesting nuggets of information that you may have missed for our California state recap.
