With the weather cooling off, leaves changing, and the calendar turning over to October, it’s officially fall. That means the high school preseason and time for the Grappler Fall Classic. Presented by Michigan Grappler, this event has become a marquee event for wrestlers across the country to tune-up for the regular season. As with everything else in 2020, Michigan Grappler has had to change course and adjust. They have moved this year’s tournament to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Being based out of Michigan, this event traditionally has a heavy Michigan and midwest flavor to it. With the 2020 tournament based in the south, it seems that that region has really turned out for the event. Most of Michigan’s big guns are still in the tournament, but states like Georgia and Florida have filled the preseeds. Six of the 15 weight classes have a wrestler from those two states with the top seeds and almost half (seven) are from the south.

Below you’ll find the top-eight preseeds from each of the 15 weight classes, a preview of the action and the top competitors, along with a finals prediction. For a few of the brackets, we’ve included a potential bracket buster, as well.

98 lbs

Preseeds: 1) Seth Mendoza (IL); 2) Javaan Yarbrough (OH); 3) Caleb Weiand (MI); 4) Colin Martin (VA); 5) Talan Parsons (MI); 6) Braylen Parker (MI); 7) Noah Graham (MI); 8) Colyn Limbert (OH)

The heavy favorite at the smallest weight is Illinois’, Seth Mendoza. This eighth-grader has won this event at the middle school level on two occasions. He competed this summer at the King of the Ring Duals and Reno Worlds and did not have a match go the distance. One of the logical finals opponents for Mendoza is freshman Javaan Yarbrough who was very active and successful on the middle school dual circuit. He may have to go through Michigan state qualifier Caleb Weiand in order to meet with Mendoza.

Finals Prediction: Mendoza over Yarbrough
