Our tour of state tournament recaps moves to one of the top states in the nation, Illinois. Its dominance in the international styles lends to national rankings for plenty of their student-athletes. Since the 2008-09 season, Illinois has been divided up into three classes for competition. Even so, there’s still plenty of talent to go around and there are always battles between ranked wrestlers throughout the tournament. It speaks to the level of competition year-in and year-out when the 2020 tournament came and went without a four-time state champion. Along those same lines, despite having a great talent base, only a handful of freshmen finished their first year of high school by calling themselves “state champions”, another testament to the difficulty of winning in Illinois.
The Illinois State Championships are held in Champaign, Illinois, on the campus of the University of Illinois, which makes sense. Four wrestlers from four different sections fill out a 16-man bracket. We have gone through all 42 brackets and found some of the interesting nuggets of information from the tournament that you may have missed in our Illinois High School State Recap.
