One of the rites of passage in the high school wrestling preseason has been Indiana Mat’s Hoosier Preseason Open. Since the 2010-11 season, the website has run this tournament, which marked the next high school campaign’s unofficial start. Typically, Indiana’s best turn out for the IHPO and this year is no different. There are state champions and placewinners from all of the midwest, south, and even places like Arizona in addition to in-state talent. Valiant Prep has a large group from the southwest to compete in the event, which will take place over Saturday and Sunday from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

As with anything in our country today, there will be an impact from the COVID-19 pandemic. Limited spectators will be in attendance with social distancing being enforced. For those unable to attend, the tournament will be live-streamed on TrackWrestling

Here is a weight-by-weight breakdown of some of the action that will occur, with predictions for the finals.

109 - Breaking down the first weight class at a preseason tournament, especially one in a year without Fargo, Cadet WTT’s, 16U/Junior Duals, can be challenging. Ultimately, we’ll probably see some freshmen emerge and announce themselves to the wrestling world. But first, some of the known commodities. Nolan Wertanen (St. Joseph’s, MI) was a Michigan D2 state champion in 2020, as a sophomore. Another returning state medalist is Daniel Guanajuato (Valiant Prep, AZ). Daniel was a third-place finisher last season in Arizona. Tanner Tishner (Western, IN) was an Indiana middle school state champion in 2019-20 that could make an impact.
