Thursday evening, Northwestern got some good news on the recruiting front as they secured a verbal commitment from their second top-100 wrestler in the Class of 2021. Carter Young (Stillwater, OK), a two-time Oklahoma state champion and three-time finalist will take his talents to Evanston in the 2021-22 season. He is currently the #74 ranked wrestler in the Class of 2021. Young was a double Cadet National finalist in Fargo back in 2017 at 94 lbs. He won the Greco tournament and was a runner-up in freestyle. Last summer, Young was seventh in Junior freestyle. He also was impressive in freestyle at the 2019 Junior Duals, winning all six matches none of which went the distance. In 2018, Carter placed in both styles at the Cadet World Team Trials in Akron. He was fifth in both freestyle and Greco at 51 kg.
In our pre-preseason rankings released last week, Young was noted as the eighth-ranked wrestler at the 132 lb weight class. Carter was also second in the Deep South Regional Rankings, a set that included seniors from the Class of 2020. In addition to his second state title in 2019-20, Young also won the Perry Tournament and was third at the KC Stampede.
The other rising senior that has committed to Matt Storniolo’s team is #11 Joel Vandervere (Warren, IL). Without any competition, it’s hard to get a feel for either of their weights, but Young is probably a 133 or 141 at the next level.
