Clovis High, Clovis California
With a total of eight Doc Buchanan medal winners and two champions, the Cougars won their fourth-straight Doc Buchanan Invitational title. The Doc Buchanan, or Doc B as it is usual refer as, it’s the toughest tournament in the state of California with many Fargo, state placers and state qualifiers wrestling under one roof. This year, Doc B was special because it was the first time that an East Coast school attended the event.
That particular school was Wyoming Seminary (Kingston, Pa.), the No. 2 ranked wrestling school in the nation. Team scores were exchange between Clovis and Wyoming Seminary all through Saturday morning and afternoon, until the 285 pound bout were the No. 3 ranked Nick Nevills (Clovis) beat No. 7 wrestler in the nation, Michael Johnson (Wyoming Seminary) 4-0 to claim a cowboy hat and the team title for Clovis. Clovis will back in action January 12 when they take on the best teams in California in a 4-way format against Vacaville, Gilroy and Host De La Salle High.
Wrestler of the Week
Jake Short (Simley High, Inver Grove Heights, Minnesota)
With a career record of 202-21and 3x State championships under his belt, Jake Short is AWN’s Wrestler of the Week. This past weekend, Short won his second Cheesehead title moving up a weight class instead of wrestling his usual 145 pounds class. With four pins and two decisions in the tournament, Short wrestled the No. 6 ranked Brian Murphy (Glenbard North, Ill.) into overtime to win the tournament. The weight class also featured Mark Hall (Apple Valley, Minn.) the No. 2 wrestler in the 152 pound weight class. For his effort, Jake Short is our wrestler of the week.
