Early Tuesday evening, Cadet Freestyle World Champion Matt Ramos (Lockport, IL) made his college choice public via social media. Ramos has committed to wrestle for the University of Minnesota and Head Coach Brandon Eggum. After finishing third at the Illinois 3A State Championships, Matt has gone on this offseason to win NHSCA Junior Nationals at 113 lbs, the NHSCA Champ vs. Champ wrestle-off, and then the UWW Cadet World Team Trials. Ramos earned his world title at 51 kilos by pinning Japan’s Kota Takahashi in the finals.

Matt is the first wrestler from the Class of 2019 to commit to the Golden Gophers. Minnesota’s 2018 recruiting class, led by number one overall Gable Steveson, was ranked third overall. He projects as a 125 lber in college and is currently the 16th ranked senior. 125 appears to be a long-term need for the Gophers if Patrick McKee moves up, as expected.
