Cal Poly’s staff has been hitting the recruiting trail hard, and the results have shown. On Saturday, the Mustangs received their sixth verbal commitment for the Class of 2019 from Victor Jaquez (Bellarmine, CA). The 91st ranked recruit in the Class of 2019, Jaquez is fresh off of an eighth-place finish at 220lbs, in Junior National Freestyle, at Fargo. Last year at the Cadet Nationals, Victor was fourth while competing at 220 pounds, as well. In his two appearances at the CIF State championships, Jaquez has placed third and fifth. Currently, he is ranked 14th in the nation at 220 lbs and projects as a 285 lber at the next level. Cal Poly could use help at the heavyweight class, as they have not had an NCAA qualifier at the largest weight since 2007.
Of the six wrestlers to commit to Cal Poly thus far, five are in-state products. Oregon’s Legend Lamer will join Jaquez, Cole Reyes, Ricky Torres, Max Aguirre and Trent Tracy in San Luis Obispo in 2019-20. Jaquez’s addition, along with Tracy, a 2018 CIF state champion, gives Head Coach Jon Sioredas’ group two top 100 recruits. Four of the five California natives placed in the top five at the CIF state tournament in 2017-18 (Reyes-fifth, Aguirre-fourth)
