The 2018 Cadet and Junior Nationals begin Saturday, January 14th, in Fargo, North Dakota with the Men’s Cadet Freestyle tournament. Join us going weight-by-weight to break the contenders who will be battling for possession of a coveted Stop Sign.
Surprisingly enough, we have a returning All-American at 88 lbs in Brandon O’Brien (Iowa). Brandon was sixth, a year ago, at this weight. What’s also interesting is that he will not be the favorite here. That distinction goes to Mason Gehloff (Minnesota). At Cadet Duals, Gehloff teched O’Brien 10-0 and did not give up a point throughout the entire tournament. Jore Volk (Minnesota) will also be one of the top contenders. He and Gehloff met in the semifinals of the Northern Plains regional, in a match Gehloff won 10-6. The other wrestler with a win over O’Brien at the Duals was Carson Nishida (Illinois). He went undefeated while splitting time with Chase Hall (Illinois). Nishida’s closest call came when he met Shane Corrigan (Wisconsin), with whom he needed criteria to defeat. Another contender that experienced success at the Duals was Jacob Van Dee (Pennsylvania). He registered a tech over Hall, 14-3.
