After a day of action in the books, we have the finals set in the 16U women’s finals along with the quarterfinals in the 16U men’s freestyle. The usual suspect dominated the women’s tournament with California and Illinois both putting five wrestlers into the finals. At 117 lbs, a pair of California natives will square off for the stop sign. Just behind the big two is Missouri that has four finalists and two others that fell in the semi’s. Nevada also has two finalists in Sterling Dias and Reece Larramendy. This marks the first time that Nevada has ever had multiple finalists in the same style, in one year (Credit to Mat-Talk Online’s Jason Bryant for that fact).  Four women (Dias, Sage Mortimer, Kennedy Blades, and Olivia Brown) will attempt to win their second title in as many years. One 2018 champion, Ally Fitzgerald (New York) was knocked off in the semi’s, 12-2, by California state champion Jennifer Soto. This year’s finalists have plenty of experience competing at national and international events. Four of them (Jennifer Soto, Korina Blades, Larramendy, and Kennedy Blades) won medals at the 2019 U15 World Championships. Dias already has a Cadet World bronze medal from 2018 and has secured a spot on the 2019 team, as have with Mortimer and Kennedy Blades.

Moving over to the Cadet men’s freestyle side, the biggest upset of the day occurred in the Round of 64 when fifth-ranked 195 lber Noah Pettigrew (Georgia) was downed by Evan Bates (Indiana) 4-1. Pettigrew was a Cadet National Champion last year.
