With a number of new champions and All-Americans already crowned in both boys and girls freestyle, we now turn our eyes to the Greco-Roman portion of Fargo. The U16 tournament gets underway on Wednesday, while the Juniors will start on Thursday. In this piece, we’ll be breaking down the Juniors as 15 more wrestlers will walk away with stop signs as national champions.
Much like in freestyle, we’ve continued to see this bracket shrink and shrink. In the regionals, we had just two champs. The first of whom Iowa’s Brandon O’Brien. O’Brien ripped through the field at the Northern Plains where he also won in freestyle. He’s coming off a second-place finish in freestyle and will be a heavy favorite hereafter becoming a Cadet All-American last year at 88.
The other regional champ is Nebraska’s Cian Lasker who took home the top spot at the Western Regional. Lasker should be the fresher of the two regional champs as he didn’t wrestle freestyle. Two other names to look out for are freestyle third-place finisher Cael Keck and then North Dakota’s own Noah Savageau who took eighth in freestyle. Both will compete in Greco and showed solid upper body and par terre work earlier in the week.
Lastly, keep an eye on Utah’s Sage Mortimer. A year ago, Mortimer competed and became an All-American in both women’s freestyle and Greco-Roman and she’s the highest returning placer at the weight class. Could she become a double champ this time around and make a bit of history?
