Each year, Cadet World Team Trials on the campus of the University of Akron brings out the best of the best in the nation in an attempt to make what is, for many, their first world team. This year was no different, but in addition to the names we already knew and expected to shine on the biggest stage, a handful of others had their breakout performances. At a time where colleges are starting the recruiting process earlier and earlier, nothing vaults you onto the scene quite like a strong performance at the toughest 16 and under tournament in the country.
These wrestlers had standout showings:
Clayton Ulrey - 80kg - Lower Dauphin (PA)
It would have been easy to pick Ulrey because of his fantastic first name, or his well-maintained mullet, or even the fact that he goes to school 15 minutes from my hometown. But the reality is the rising senior, who remains uncommitted, earned his recognition on the mat.
