Last night, the #16 ranked wrestler in the class of 2020, Jesse Vasquez,  made his college intentions known. Vasquez will stay out west and wrestle for Zeke Jones,’ Arizona State Sun Devils. Arizona State made headlines last week when they announced Frank Molinaro as a new assistant coach and Hawkeye Wrestling Club coach Mark Perry is headed to Tempe, as well. The good news continues as the Sun Devils get a commitment from the top available senior in the nation.

Vasquez became only the fourth four-time state champion in the state’s long, illustrious history this season. By today’s standards, it was unusual that a prospect of Jesse’s caliber would be available this late in the recruiting game. In addition to his state championships, Jesse has made the finals of the Super 32 on two occasions, along with the Doc Buchanan, once. He also placed twice at the Walsh Ironman, taking second as a freshman and sixth as a sophomore.

Jesse projects as a 149 lber and that looks like a huge need for the Sun Devils, who have lost three-time national qualifier Josh Maruca to graduation. Currently there is no clear-cut replacement for Maruca. One possibility could have seen Navonte Demison moving up from 141 lbs, where he was 4-12 in 2019-20. Barring a transfer, Vasquez may be needed to go immediately, from day one.
