As we move smack dab in the middle of the holiday season and only have one weekend remaining in the 2020 calendar year, there was still plenty of action on the high school front. High School wrestling has been hot and heavy in the Midwest and South, with a few other areas sprinkled in between. While Tyrant’s Armageddon didn’t have the depth at some weights as we expected, there were plenty of notable items to take from that tournament’s results. Iowa had a few strong events with a couple of heavy hitters from out-of-state, too. Here is a quick look at all of the results with national implications, upsets, and collisions between highly-ranked opponents from the weekend.
We touted Drew Gorman as one of the best eighth-graders in Georgia in our preview, but he’s much more than that and proved it by taking the title at 106 lbs. Drew tallied a pin, tech, and major decision on his way to finals, which pitted him against 2020 Florida state champion Ethan Rivera (Lake Highland Prep, FL). In last week’s Southeast Regional Rankings, Rivera came in second at 106 lbs. Gorman edged Rivera 4-3 for the title.
