This week’s Adidas High School Wrestler of the Week award goes to Joey Cruz of Clovis North High School in Fresno, California. Cruz, just a freshman, won the 51-kilogram 16U division of FloNationals this past weekend in Indiana, Pennsylvania, by going 4-0 in freestyle competition with a pair of technical falls and one fall. In his opening match, he picked up a 12-2 tech fall win over PA state qualifier Cole Bayless. Then, in the quarterfinals, he rolled to 10-0 tech fall victory against 113-pound honorable mention Max Black. Cruz stayed hot in the semis, pinning former Cadet World Team member Chance Lamer after taking a 9-1 lead. The finals, however, were Cruz’ most impressive showing. In a rematch of last year’s FloNationals finals, Cruz scored five straight points to come from behind and take out No. 1-ranked Richie Figueroa, a bronze medalist at Cadet Worlds and the second-ranked prospect in the Class of 2021.
Congratulations to Joey Cruz, TOM’s High School Wrestler of the Week.
