Over the weekend, some of the best wrestlers in the nation flocked to Las Vegas for the US Open. This included some of the top high schoolers, including this week’s Adidas High School Wrestler of the Week, Gabe Tagg. Tagg spent his senior season at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado as a part of the Elite Accelerator Program. Over the weekend he won a loaded 61 kilogram bracket to clinch an automatic berth in the finals of Junior World Team Trials. Along the way, Tagg went 5-0 with four technical falls and one pin. In the round of 16, he topped talented Penn freshman Doug Zapf. Gabe then knocked off one of the country’s top sophomores in Teague Travis. Tagg kept the momentum going in the semifinals when he rolled past NC State’s Jarrett Trombley, who had previously dispatched the second-seeded Jordan Decatur in the quarters. For the icing on the cake, Tagg came from 4-2 down at the break to pin Penn State All-American Roman Bravo-Young in the finals. The Ohio native will continue his career in college for Coleman Scott at the University of North Carolina.
Congratulations to Gabe Tagg, TOM’s High School Wrestler of the Week.
