This week’s High School Wrestler of the Week is Andrew Alirez of Greeley Central High School in Greeley, Colorado. Alirez, who is ranked No. 1 in the country at 152 pounds and is undefeated in high school competition, tried his hand at the Senior freestyle level over the weekend at the Dave Schultz Memorial Invitational in Colorado Springs. The senior went 4-2 and finished fourth at 65 kilograms with his only losses coming to two-time NCAA finalist Bryce Meredith. On his way to the consolation finals, he picked up wins over former Northern Iowa All-American Joey Lazor, as well as former two-time national champion Dean Heil. In his first match with Meredith, Alirez actually took a 5-0 lead but was unable to fend off a furious comeback. The senior is set to continue his wrestling career for Troy Nickerson at the University of Northern Colorado and is ranked as one of the top ten recruits in the 2019 class.
Congratulations to Andrew Alirez, TOM’s High School Wrestler of the Week
