This week’s Adidas High School Wrestler of the Week award goes to Jesse Mendez of Crown Point High School in Crown Point, Indiana. Mendez, an Indiana state championship, was already on the national radar when he headed to Cadet World Team Trials in Akron. This past weekend, he cemented his status as one of the best wrestlers in the Class of 2022 as he made the Cadet world team at 60 kilograms. Mendez, the No. 4-ranked wrestler in the country, started his tournament off with a tech fall in the opening round and then a fall in his second match. In the Round of 16, he put together an impressive 13-5 victory over third-ranked Mick Burnett of Ohio. He then turned in a dominant performance in the quarterfinals with a 13-1 technical fall over No. 15 Caleb Rathjen, an Iowa state champion. Mendez had to come from behind in semis after falling down 4-0 to No. 2 at 138 pounds, Dominick Serrano. He used a big throw for five to take the lead and held on for the 7-7 victory on criteria. In the best two out of three finals, Mendez put up back-to-back wins over Anthony Ferrari, who is now a two-time runner-up in Akron. Mendez is currently undefeated in freestyle and folkstyle after failing to place at Super 32 last Fall.

Congratulations to Jesse Mendez, TOM’s High School Wrestler of the Week.
