This week’s High School Wrestler of the Week is Sammy Alvarez of St. Joseph Regional in Montvale, New Jersey. Over the weekend, the seventh-ranked wrestler in the country at 126 pounds took home his first state championship by defeating No. 1 Robbie Howard of Bergen Catholic, 5-3 in the sudden victory. It was the first state championship for Alvarez and the first for his high school since 2004. The senior had lost in the finals in each of the last two years to Anthony Clark of Delbarton at 106 and 113. This year, Alvarez picked up three falls in his first three bouts before topping 2018 state champion Joey Olivieri of Hanover Park 6-1 to reach the finals. Alvarez, who will continue his wrestling career for Pat Popolizio at NC State, was named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler.

Congratulations to Sammy Alvarez, TOM’s High School Wrestler of the Week.
